BILOXI, Miss. — Two Mississippi sports organizations are merging to create one competitive athletic event serving seniors across the state.
Mississippi Senior Olympics will merge with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Senior Games (MGCSG) and market their programs under the Mississippi Senior Olympics name. Don Cross, a long-term board member for MGCSG and supporter of both organizations, will serve as the executive director.
“Our goal is to encourage a more active lifestyle for seniors,” said Cross. “Whether they’re 50 or 80, one thing senior athletes have in common is they’re serious competitors. They play to win a gold medal.”
The Mississippi Senior Olympics was formerly headquartered in Clinton and held statewide competitions at metro Jackson locations. The MGCSG served as a feeder to the state games in Clinton. The combined organization will be headquartered in Biloxi, and competitions will be held at event-specific locations across the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
We’re excited that Mississippi Senior Olympics will serve as a tourism draw for the Mississippi Gulf Coast,” said Cross. “This merger gives us a competitive advantage in possibly becoming the regional host for the southeastern games.”
“This move will ensure continued growth for our senior athletic programs,” said former Senior Olympics board member Pam Hart. “The Coast has an excellent retiree and tourist base, numerous event venues and significant fiscal support. This merger is a win for everyone.”
The Mississippi Senior Olympics is open to anyone age 50 or older. Registration is $20 per participant and competitive events include: 5k run/walk; badminton; ballroom dance; basketball; bean bag baseball; bocce ball; bowling; cycling; darts; disc golf; Frisbee golf; golf; horseshoes; karaoke; kayak/canoe; line dancing; pickle ball; racquetball; shuffleboard; swimming; table tennis; tennis; track and field; and volleyball.
